Bill Burnett, co-author of the New York Times bestseller Designing Your Life, has helped countless people design and prototype a better life. At the heart of his work lies a familiar tool: design thinking.

Bill recently joined us for a second time on the show to talk about his latest book, How to Live a Meaningful Life. Through years of coaching and teaching at Stanford, Bill and co-author Dave Evans discovered that even those who have “figured out” their careers often find themselves stuck on a deeper question: “What is the meaning of life?”

Is meaning something we derive from our work? Perhaps—but sometimes, work is just work. Should it come from our personal lives instead?

In How to Live a Meaningful Life, Bill suggests there is no singular “meaning of life” waiting for us on a mountaintop. Instead, by using the power of design, we can find ways to extract more meaning out of life. Bill argues that designers are uniquely wired to find fulfillment because the craft requires a specific set of mindsets.

To build a life that is “fully alive,” Bill identifies four essential elements: Wonder, Coherence, Community, and Flow.

Let’s break down each of these elements.
