AI + Design Thinking Immersive Workshop

Generative AI (GenAI) is revolutionizing the way we work. This 4-hour interactive workshop (which can be split over two days) will help you get hands-on with GenAI tools and identify where and when to leverage AI to support your design work. Explore new ways of working and build confidence in the tools of tomorrow.

  • Learn key mindsets and strategies to leverage GenAI as a thought partner.

  • Experiment with real-world applications. Build your confidence and see the possibilities firsthand. Develop your own point of view about where generative AI shines and where it fails.

  • Network with fellow designers. Engage in rich discussion, reflect, and share best practices.

Note: This workshop focuses primarily on the use of public chat-based generative AI tools like Chat GPT, Gemini, and Dall-E.

Details

The workshop is hosted by Bobby Hughes, IDEO alum and former lecturer at the Stanford d.school, and Eli Woolery, co-host of the Design Better Podcast and lecturer in Stanford's design program.

Agenda

We'll learn/experience together during the workshop

  • Ideas for utilizing generative AI (GenAI) throughout the design process

  • A simple design challenge, where we'll collaborate with teammates to synthesize, ideate, and create a narrative using GenAI

  • Along the way, some examples of AI use in the "real world" for research, prototyping, etc

  • Tips for working with GenAI

What we won't cover in depth during the workshop

  • Specialized tools for specific domains within design (e.g. UI design, motion graphics, etc).

  • Extensive case studies

We’ve been running these workshops, both in-person and remote, for Fortune 100 teams, include companies working on GenAI tools. One of our big takeaways is that many people simply don’t have time in their day-to-day workflow to explore this new technology, and this workshop provides just that—a valuable space for experimentation, discussion, and reflection on how the world and our jobs are changing with generative AI. Testimonials

The AI+ Design Thinking workshop sharpened a powerful new tool in my design toolbox. I especially appreciated the hands-on approach of the workshop that helped me understand how to unlock AI as a creative collaborator that can still fit into my individual creative process.

Eli and Bobby struck a great balance between offering guiderails and useful prompting strategies as well as time to experiment with other workshop participants. As a recent graduate new to the design industry, I'm stepping into a world where fluency with AI will be essential. Eli and Bobby's workshop has given me a solid foundation to best leverage AI in my design work as I start my career.

—Lina Fowler, Purchase Experience Designer at Concept Designs

[The workshop] was very helpful. The prompting frameworks blew my mind!

I better understand how to use AI throughout the user-centered design process. I've already integrated some of what I learned into my workflow.

—Brian Carr, fmr. Staff Interaction Designer at Google

I had a great time, made some great connections, and learned a ton about how I might apply AI in my own design thinking process. The tools you shared were so helpful and I can't wait to apply them!

I particularly liked the conversation we had around synthetic personas - I have to imagine that's going to come up for a lot of folks as these models are more widely adopted at companies. Thanks for leaving space for that great conversation!

—Bianca Zongrone Jefferson, Director of Product Design and Research at CompanyCam

"The workshop helped me better understand how to leverage AI in my work instead of turning away from and fearing it. This alone is huge."

—Yona Belfort, Founder & VP of Hardware at Minnow

I had the chance to participate in the second session of the "AI+Design Thinking" workshop. Eli and Bobby did an amazing job hosting, which left a lasting impression on me. It was great to listen and engage with a diverse group of design professionals share their experiences and to undergo the complete design thinking process with the integration of various GenAI tools.

AI is here to stay and if you're looking to implement it into your workflow or just want to learn more about the subject, this workshop is a great starting point.
